Milvian Bridge as
turning point for Christianity.
In 312 a.d. the Roman Empire was in turmoil. Maxentius and
Constantine were competing to be Emperor. As Constantine invaded from the North,
Maxentius attempted to defend Rome at the Tiber River, two miles outside
the city. The Milivian bridge was torn down to prevent further invasion, but to
no avail. The battle was won by Constantine and his army - Maxentius died in the
Tiber River.
Constantine had some experience with Christianity and had
apparently had a vision which involved the Christian Cross and the words
"In This, Conquer". The victory was seen as a powerful affirmation of
the Christian God. One result was that Christianity became a legal religion in
the Empire. Constantine saw in this Faith a unifying force for the troubled
Empire. He also appears to have had a genuine experience of faith in Jesus.
The relating of church and state had good and bad results.
Many who look back from a 21st century viewpoint feel that mingling of forceful
governmental powers with the personal faith and spiritual communities is bound
to produce serious problems for both sides.
Honored as a leader who enabled Christian faith to expand its
global presence, Constantine is especially recognized in the Orthodox Christian
tradition.
